RESIDENTS of the Fire Island community of Cherry Grove are very ''ecology minded,'' according to John Roberts, president of the Cherry Grove Property Owners Association. ''It's a gift to the town for their beautification program,'' Mr. Biafe said his corporation ordered and paid $25,000 for a split-rail fence that will be erected near the former site of the chain-link fence but nearer the road so that it ''follows the contours of the Old Montauk Highway.'' The fence had gone up to prevent people from trespassing, getting hurt on the property and suing the owner, according to Mr. ''We were concerned that tourists might not return to Montauk in 1986 once they learned of the existence of the fence and the controversy surrounding it.'' ''We wanted to alleviate any problems to the Montauk business community,'' he said. Warner left his money to the Greenport churches, they still haven't received it.
